Reprieve runs a volunteer program, allowing foreign
nationals to donate three months or more of their time as volunteers
in criminal defense offices representing poor people facing the
death penalty.
Reprieve has successfully conducted this volunteer
program for a number of years and has sent nearly 100 interns to
death penalty defense offices around the country.
The internship program is ideal for those studying
or practicing law or related fields but has attracted broad interest
across a range of disciplines. Legal studies are not a prerequisite
to participation in the program. Reprieve welcomes applicants from
a broad variety of backgrounds.
The program focuses on placing volunteers at death
penalty defense offices throughout the deep south and in other areas
with critically underfunded indigent defense systems.
The work of our volunteers has proven vital to the
offices in which they are placed. All of the offices are non-profits
and volunteer workers can often be the only way that these offices
are able to meet the demands of their workloads for their clients.
Successful volunteers are marked by an unshakeable
opposition to the death penalty and a firm commitment to social
justice. They possess the maturity and self-sufficiency needed to
meet the demands of both the work and placement in a foreign country.
